Biography
Musa al-Gharbi’s research primarily focuses on the political economy of knowledge production and the “social life” of scholarly and journalistic outputs. His work has analyzed how scholars and journalists conceptualize and discuss race, inequality, social movements, extremism, policing, national security, foreign policy and domestic U.S. political contests. His first book, We Have Never Been Woke: The Cultural Contradictions of a New Elite, was published by Princeton University Press in October 2024.
Dr. al-Gharbi’s work has been cited by a number of governmental and other organizations, including the Department of State, the Army War College and the Council on Foreign Relations, among others. He has consulted with nonprofits, corporate executives and policymakers in the U.S. and abroad. He is regularly tapped by journalists and media organizations to discuss current events, to include spots with NPR, CNN, USA Today, the Wall Street Journal, Voice of America and others.
Over the course of his journalistic career, Musa has served as a columnist for Compact Magazine, The Guardian, Salon and Al-Jazeera America and has produced freelance work with the New York Times, Washington Post, The Atlantic, The Nation, New Republic and many other outlets.
Dr. al-Gharbi has also played a pivotal role in supporting Heterodox Academy, a non-partisan non-profit dedicated to helping institutions of higher learning better reflect and engage with perspectives that are underrepresented in the academy.
